Sony Playstation phone unveiled

Today in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress event, Sony Ericsson officially revealed what has quickly become known as one of the worst kept secrets in gadget history.

The Playstation Phone – or Xperia Play as it has now officially been titled will have more than 50 games available to play at its launch in spring, including The Sims 3, Asphalt Adrenaline 6 and the legendary Playstation game, Crash Bandicoot – all of which come preloaded onto the phone. Other popular series making their way to Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play include Assassin’s Creed, Fifa and Battlefield.
The device will also be able to download and play PSone games thanks to the Android marketplace initially, and then later on in the year, the Playstation Store.

The Xperia Play features a new media player, 2 cameras (front and back) and a 4 inch multi-touch display that can impressively run true HD games at 60 fps. The phone will be released with the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) software on it, and will allow for multiplayer gaming with friends. The Xperia Play is also Playstation Certified. Speaking of the Xperia Play, Sony said that it’s the,” World’s first-ever PlayStation certified device… the perfect combination of communication and entertainment.”

The phone will be launching in the US exclusively on the Verizon network, Sony Ericsson’s head of marketing for North America, Peter Farmer said, “Xperia PLAY combined with the power of the Verizon Wireless network gives you everything you need in a smartphone and the one thing you want – the ultimate gaming experience.”
When it launches in the UK, the Xperia Play will be available on all major networks including O2, Orange and Three.

The US will be the first country to receive the Xperia Play as shipping of the device starts in March, and with the UK release being set for April, we can expect to see “lots of people with their heads down and thumbs up” this spring. No price has currently been announced.
