Game Of Thrones Airs in UK To Massive Ratings!

Based on the series of Novels ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘ by Author George RR Martin, Game of Thrones premiered on UK Screens last night and early indications from Sky Atlantic show that it has been a massive hit for the channel.  The show which premièred on the channel at 9pm, averaged over 743,000 viewers between 9pm and 10:10pm, with a peak of 823,000.  These numbers mean that the show is the channels highest debut to date (The previous being the Martin Scorsese epic, Boardwalk Empire which averaged 438,000 on it’s opening night) and the audience figures are thought to rise higher still when those using timeshifted viewing such as Sky+ are taken into account.

Filmed on Location in Malta and Northern Ireland, Game of Thrones headlines with a cast ranging from Sean Bean (Lord Of The Rings) and Lena Headey (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) to Jason Momoa (Stargate Atlantis) and Charles Dance (Merlin) and has already received acclaim from critics here and in America.

From it’s inception in 2006/7 by Executive Producer David Benioff, Game of Thrones was taken up by American network HBO in 2009 to run as a 10-part series.

The story is a medieval tale of the “Violent Dynastic struggles among Noble families for control of the Iron Throne”. It is a gritty tale which is dark and complex with scenes of sex and violence – which may not be everyone’s cup of tea – but  is an important aspect to both the books and show as they reveal the reality of life in the middle ages.

It is advisable to watch from the first episode so that it can be understood. I second that as I’ve just watched the first aired episode and there are many threads to each of the story arcs presented. But so far Game of Thrones looks set to be and interesting piece of Fantasy Drama.

Game of Thrones airs on HBO on Sundays and Sky Atlantic on Mondays.
