New Rurouni Kenshin Anime Announced!

Wandering Samurai fans rejoice!  Shuiesha’s Jump Square magazine will be announcing on Thursday that a brand new Rurouni Kenshin anime has been green lit for production. Details are scarce on what format the project will take so it could be a new series, a spin off series or a stand alone film. More details have been promised in future editions of Jump Square.

The original manga written and illustrated Nobuhiro Watsuki ran for five years (1994-1999) in Shonen Jump magazine and was turned in to an anime shortly after which is currently enjoying a fifteen year anniversary. It was published in America by Viz Media in 2003. The series follows lone wanderer Himura Kenshin, an assassin from the Bakumatsu who has made it his life’s mission to atone for his dark past by helping those in need. The story is set in and around real historical events and many of the characters are based on people who really existed. Although the tone has an undercurrent of darkness Watsuki manages to keep it entertaining and hilarious with plenty of battles and jokes included.

Furthermore, Square also gave details of forthcoming Blu-ray editions of the Rurouni Kenshin OVA projects and the Requiem film which will be unleashed between the 24th of August and 26th of October. In addition to that a compilation cd will be released on the 27th of July.
