Impressive cast line up for The Wachowski’s Cloud Atlas

The Wachowski’s were in Cannes, announcing quite the cast for their latest film, Cloud Atlas.

Last month came the news that Tom Hanks and Halle Berry had joined the $100 million production, it has now also been revealed also  Jim Broadbent, Susan Sarandon, Hugo Weaving and Ben Whishaw are to star in the project. Their characters are as yet unconfirmed, though given the strangely inter-connected storylines, the actors are expected to play multiple roles.

The film is an adaptation of the award-winning novel by David Mitchell, which tells six connected stories spanning from the 19th century to a post-apocalyptic future. What makes the novel so unique is its structure, with each story taken from the perspective of a character from another story; so it’ll be interesting to see how this is translated into film.

Also joining The Wachowski’s is Tom Tykwer, as co-writer, co-director and producer. Given how his film Run Lola Run successfully told three alternate (but somewhat connected) stories, Tykwer’s involvement should be a definite godsend to the brothers.

Cloud Atlas is to begin shooting in September, and is scheduled be released sometime in 2012.
