Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 Reaches $1 Billion

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 has become the latest blockbuster to earn over $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Having reached the landmark figure on its 19th day of release, this ties it with Avatar as one of the fastest films to reach $1 billion.

After its record breaking opening weekend at the US box office, the film did crash hard on its second week. Still, over $310 million in the US is a fantastic number, and its strong international takings (just under $700 million) have been enough to carry it over the billion-dollar mark.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon will also cross the mark within the next day or two, having so far earned just over $980 million worldwide. They both join Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides as the highest grossing films of the year. It’s also worth noting that these three films were all released in 3D. Regardless of how you may feel about the format, its success with these blockbusters means that it’s certainly here to stay.

The top ten all time worldwide box office has seen a fair bit of movement, since we last reported on it less than a month ago. It currently stands as follows:

1. Avatar (2009) – $2,782,275,172

2. Titanic (1997) – $1,843,201,268

3. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) – $1,119,110,941

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006) – $1,066,179,725

5. Toy Story 3 (2010) – $1,063,171,911

6. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) – $1,032,828,392

7. Alice in Wonderland (2010) – $1,024,299,904

8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) – $1,008,460,000

9. The Dark Knight (2008) – $1,001,921,825

10. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) – $982.892,000

Deathly Hallows Part 2 is currently ranked as the 8th highest grossing film worldwide, behind Disney’s Alice in Wonderland. However, the speed at which it’s managed to reach $1 billion means that it’ll most likely finish up in the Top 5.
