Borderlands 2 Officially Announced

2k Games and Gearbox Software announced today that the sequel to the highly successful RPG shooter Borderlands is currently in development. Borderlands 2 will feature brand new characters, weapons, enemies, skills, and a completely new storyline.

Released in 2009, Borderlands featured a group of bounty hunters, whose soul ambition was to collect treasure, earn themselves some new weapons, and gain some credibility on the barren wasteland of the planet Pandora. The game shifted an impressive 2 million copies within the first two months of release, which prompted creative director Mike Neumann to state that a Borderlands sequel would be a “no brainer.” Whilst details at this time are sparse, Borderlands 2 promises to continue on the formula adopted in its predecessor, but improve on the few flaws that the first carried. New areas of Pandora will be available for players to explore, allowing for a much more expansive game play experience.

Publisher 2k Games has announced that Borderlands 2 will be shown in more detail at Gamescon in Cologne between the 17th and 21st August, and then at PAX Prime from the 26th to the 28th August. There are hints that a trailer and/or game play demo may be shown to the attendees at both of these events. More details should arise closer to the time, so until then, fans will just have to wait and see what Gearbox Software has included in this already highly anticipated sequel.

Borderlands 2 is expected to have a release date sometime in 2012, though depending on progress, it could end up being pushed back to 2013. Like the previous game, it will be released on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC.
