MCM Buzz Exclusive: Eureka creator speaks about cancellation!

Following the many reports in recent weeks about the supposed cancellation of the hit series Eureka, SyFy have now officially confirmed that following the 13 episodes they ordered last year (12 normal episodes and one Christmas special) the show will draw to a close.

So as fans begin to mourn the loss of this fantastic series that has long been the highlight of the summer television schedules, The MCM Buzz went straight to the heart of Eureka and spoke to series co-creator and show runner, Jaime Paglia (Who flew to Canada solely to thank the cast and crew for the last seven years) about this news. Here is what he had to say: “Sadly, we are going to be bringing Eureka to a close.  Our amazing network and studio executives are as devastated by the decision as we are.  It’s hard to understand given that our ratings have exceeded expectations and continue to climb as viewers adjust to us being on a new night and time.  Unfortunately, this is a fiscal decision, not a creative one.  I’m incredibly proud of the work that our team has done.We hope to have an additional episode so we can give the fans and our characters a proper farewell.  Fingers crossed.”

So there you have it the end of an era and in this writers opinion it is a huge mistake on behalf of the network to let this series go, especially after it has a constant performer for them in the summer seasons and has survived and in fact grown it’s audience each time it has been moved in the schedules.  However as Jaime alluded in the above comments the decision to end the show was purely financial. A fact that has been echoed on twitter by the shows Co-executive producer Amy Berg who tweeted, “We are the network’s golden child in every way, except profit margins. Fact is, #Eureka is an expensive show to make. And we could not maintain the quality of our show with the cuts it would take to make us profitable for Syfy’s new parent company. Our creative execs at Syfy fought hard to keep us. Trust me, they LOVE us. We just couldn’t make the numbers work.”

One hope Eureka has for survival is that the show has developed over the years a passionate fan base and this news has already spurred them into action with fans putting together online petitions and special websites all urging for the show to be saved. It is this fan support that prompted actor lead actor Colin Ferguson (Sheriff Carter) to tweet the following, “Thanks for the outpouring of affection everyone. YOU made the show. YOU made it special. YOU made it worth being part of. Thank you so much.”

Another hope is that SyFy and the team behind Eureka could make a deal with another network (Starz anyone?) that sees some of the production costs covered in order to make a new series.

However if this does not happen and we are to see the end of Eureka then I, like many other fans of the show, would like to thank the cast and crew of this fantastic series for their hard work and for providing us with five seasons of top quality entertainment and wish them all the best of luck for the future.
