Hugo release date announced

The arrival of autumn has not only brought about colder weather but also a sudden surge of release dates for numerous winter warmers and autumn audience pleasers set to entertain us during the approach to Christmas. One of which is Martin Scorsese’s latest film and first 3D venture, Hugo.

Adapted from the novel ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’, the film follows an orphaned teenage boy who lives in the Paris’ Gare Du Nord station in the 1930’s. After he encounters a cold reserved man who runs the station’s toy shop he gets caught up in a mysterious adventure which threatens to put all his secrets in jeopardy. For some  that might not sound very thrilling, but throw in forgotten film director George Melies, a mysterious toy store, an ‘automation’ – an art deco robot to you and me – and a bit of imagination and what you get is a truly fascinating film.

The announcement of the release date for Hugo has attracted a fair bit of excitement due to its star-studded cast of both British and transatlantic talent, including the boy with the blue eyes Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas), Chloë Moretz (Kick-Ass), Jude Law and Christopher Lee along with Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat) no doubt as comic relief, and Ben Kingsley as George Melies, the book’s inspiration and whose life the story is loosely based on.

Quite an eclectic cast I’m sure you’ll agree and it’s the same story behind the scenes, with Johnny Depp as a producer – so we’re guaranteed some peculiarness. The screenplay has been written by John Logan whose credits include The Time Machine, The Aviator, Tim Burton’s Sweeny Todd and most recently Rango. Needless to say the period setting and nature of Hugo has been no challenge.
