Real Steel Virgin America Airplane

On the run up to its release, there has been a lot more promotion than one would expect for Real Steel. The following is probably the most bizarre.

At Los Angeles International Airport, star Hugh Jackman unveiled Virgin America’s Airbus A320, which features the film’s boxing robot Atom embossed across the side. One of the reasons behind this unusual bit of marketing is because Virgin America is one of the promotional partners featured in the film (see the TV spot below). It’s also part of a tie-in competition to view the film at its premiere in Los Angeles (only open to those in the US I’m afraid). Those that fly Virgin America can also view the film as a part of its in-flight entertainment later this year.

As well as promoting the film, Jackman also had praise for Virgin America, saying, “I fly Virgin, I love them. I find they’re fresh and young, and it feels new.”

The film is set during an alternate reality where robot boxing has become the main sport. Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) is a former boxer who now works as a promoter. After taking in his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo), the two of them unearth the robot Atom, who they train to become a championship contender.

Real Steel opens in the US on October 7th and in the UK on October 14th.
