New Movie Release Previews! Epic Film Trailers At The Universal Stand!

Universal Pictures are showing off some very cool trailers on lovely HD screens over the weekend at their stand, just outside the MCM Theatre. MCM Buzz was on hand to offer first hand impressions of the trailers.

Immortals: As soon as the title ‘From the producers of 300‘ appears, you know what you’re in for. Incredible, stylised and truly epic! Immortals tells the story of Theseus (future Man Of Steel, Henry Cavill) , a mortal chosen by Zeus (John Hurt) to save humanity from the evil King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) who is searching for a weapon in Ancient Greece to destroy the human world! The film is directed by Tarsem Singh. It’s safe to say this will be one of the most visually impressive films this year with detailed compositions that resemble Renaissance art. Every sword blow is rendered in Zack Snyder style slow motion, every action has a reaction with consequences that include, avalanches, tidal waves and powerful beams of energy shooting in to the universe. It’s as if the Gods themselves sculpted the look with help of Raphael. A must see on the 11th November.

Battleship: When Universal and Hasbro announced a film was to be made of the classic game, Battleships, the world went “what?!” However, the trailer shows that if you add an extra-terrestrial element and Liam Neeson to proceedings it becomes a far more exciting prospect. We get some back-story for the main character who is the sort of guy who gets in to a bar brawl and ducks out of class but still manages to be the fastest to complete Navy Seals training as he sets off on his first voyage aboard a US Naval aircraft carrier. The task force happen upon something in the ocean which turns out to be a giant battleship from another world. And there are more… Battleship looks like it could be surprisingly good and with experienced action director, Peter Berg at the helm, things are looking up for April 20th 2012.

The Lorax: This was a more of a teaser trailer than anything else but when you look at who’s behind it, you’ll already start to look forward to it. The Lorax is from the team behind Ice Age, Despicable Me and most importantly, the endlessly inventive and fun Horton Hears A Who! – the team’s first stab at the classic tales from Dr. Seuss. The Lorax has exactly the same otherworldy look and tone of Horton Hears A Who! which is good because that was taken from the look and feel of the illustrations in the books. It’s all bright colours and fluffy creatures (and plants) you just want to cuddle. It might look all cutesy but Illumination Studios know their way around razor-sharp humour and surreal scenes that are like no other in animated or live action film. The Lorax is released on July 27th in the UK, a perfect date to capture the summer holiday audience. The cast includes Zac Efron, Danny DeVito, Ed Helms and the legendary Betty White.

Intruders: Creepy monsters in the closet; the director of 28 Weeks Later (Juan Carlos Fresnadillo); Clive Owen; chilling scares. Reading that you can see this is a film following in the strong tradition of Spanish horror tales such as those written by Guillermo Del Toro. And the footage in this trailer looks very, very good! The grain of the wood on a closet door slightly lit by the faint light coming through the window and shrouded in shadow hides a horrifying secret. The film tells parallel stories of two families whose lives are disrupted by menacing apparitions while in Spain, a mother tries to protect her son from a faceless stranger, while in Britain, a young girl has terrifying dreams of a demon who becomes a real danger to her and her family. There is a UK release date of January 27th so be sure to remove any wardrobes from your home before then in order to avoid the high cost of therapy…

American Pie: Reunion: If you’ve already seen this red band trailer which features a scene involving Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), Jim (Jason Biggs) and their son, you’ll have realised that the teen sex comedy series is firmly back in high smut territory. We won’t spoil the trailer if you haven’t seen it, but it is very funny and we’re looking forward to the whole of the original cast reuniting for more toilet hilarity and hijinks on the 6th of April.

The Thing: The prequel to the 1982 John Carpenter classic sci- fi horror follows a group of scientists on a mission to Antarctica who uncover a creature, frozen in the ice and in waking it up, unwittingly unleash a terrible shape-shifter who takes on the likeness of anything it kills. The trailer reminds us of 30 Days Of Night and Dawn Of The Dead – the latter of which was produced by the same people – as the group struggles to survive in the hostile situation. Paranoia and dread set in as they realise any one of them could be the creature. There are some weird, disturbing shape shifting effects on show and visually, The Thing looks slickly made. It is released on 2nd December and should make a horrific addition to the heart warming Christmas market!

Other trailers on show included the new all star heist caper from director, Brett Ratner which sees the return of Eddie Murphy on comic form to the big screen as well as Ben Stiller, Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Alan Alda, Judd Hirsch, Tea Leoni, Michael Pena and Gabourey Sidibe. Released on 2nd November it looks like it could be one of the funnier comedy flicks of the year. The last film in the lineup is Big Miracle which stars Drew Barrymore in a heart warming tale based on a true story of the people in Barrow, Alaska (minus the vampires) who band together to save a family of Grey Whales which have become stranded under the rapidly expanding ice in the Arctic Circle. It looks like a nice, family film during which people may shed a tear or chuckle at a witty line here and there but compared to the films above, on the 10th February 2012 you may be watching something else…

So, a strong lineup for Universal Pictures and lots to look forward to in the coming year!
