David Yates to direct Doctor Who film

David Yates, director of the last four Harry Potter movies has told the Daily Variety that he will be developing a Doctor Who film with the BBC.

The project will see Yates working with BBC Worldwide head, Jane Tranter, and will be seperate from the show that Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat have brought to our screens since 2005.
Speaking to Variety, Yates said, “Russell T. Davies and then Steven Moffat have done their own transformations, which were fantastic, but we have to put that aside and start from scratch.”

Doctor Who has been turned into movies in the past, most recently with the TV movie that featured Paul Mcgann as the 8th Doctor in 1996. This film was viewed as a canon part of the story, but it is unclear where the upcoming movie will stand. Fans will have to wait to find out though. According to Yates, “We’re looking at writers now. We’re going to spend two to three years to get it right, it needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena.”

With BBC Worldwide being based in LA, fans are worried about the long-running British show becoming “americanized” in the movie adaptation. Yates said, “We want a British sensibility, but having said that, Steve Kloves wrote the Potter films and captured that British sensibility perfectly, so we are looking at American writers too.”

Doctor Who returned to the BBC after sixteen years off the air in 2005, the show has been growing in popularity ever since with viewing figures from the 2011 series finale reaching 6.1 million overnight.

Matt Smith currently plays the 11th Doctor on tv, but it seems like David Yates will be searching for a new actor to play the lead role when it becomes time to cast for the movie.

No more information regarding the film is available at this time, but rest assured we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled and will keep you informed as more is revealed on the project.

Does the sounds of this movie fill you with dread? Would you rather see the BBC make the movie in the UK with the current cast and crew? What, if any, changes should be made to the canon of the series for the film? Add your thoughts and comments below!
