Price of PlayStation Vita slashed in Japan after less than three weeks

Sony’s PlayStation Vita launched in Japan on December 16th and sold a fantastic 324,859 units during its first weekend on sale. However, during the week from December 19th – 25th, there was a sharp 78% decline, as the Vita only managed to shift a meagre 72,479 units. Oh dear.

Not only was the Vita outsold by Nintendo’s 3DS on the run up to Christmas, with 482,200 3DS’ sold during the same period, but it was even outsold by its predecessor, the PSP, which managed to shift 101,121 consoles. Oh dear. The lack of sales has prompted an unofficial price cut by Japanese stores, though it is the more expensive 3G+Wi-Fi versions of the Vita which are the only ones being discounted.

The 3G+Wi-Fi PlayStation Vita initially retailed at ¥29,980, which is about £250 / $390 / 431 Peppermint Aero bars. As a comparison, the Wi-Fi only Vita retails for just ¥24,980, which is about £208 / $325 / 198 packs of Jaffa Cakes. Many stores are slashing the 3G+Wi-Fi Vita down to ¥24,999, which puts in line with the Wi-Fi version. Bloomberg Japan did reach Sony’s head of PR Satoshi Fukuoka to ask him about the drop in sales, but he declined to comment.

Back in the summer of 2011, Sony Computer Entertainment’s Chairman, Kazuo Hirai thought the price of the PlayStation Vita was just right, saying, “We have a very good product at a very affordable price. There’s no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the video game industry decided they were going to,” referring to Nintendo’s 3DS.

It’s too early to tell if Sony’s latest handheld console is a flop. The release of new games (of which there are currently very few) should help keep the Vita afloat. However, if sales end up the same way during its launch in Europe and America, then might they might do a Nintendo and announce an official reduction a few months later.

The PlayStation Vita arrives on UK and US shelves on February 22nd.
