Nintendo renaming the Wii U?

Since E3 2011, many industry analysts have been criticising Nintendo’s plan to name their next home console the Wii U. The latest rumour moving through the industry is that they’re planning to rebrand the Wii U in the months leading up to this year’s E3 press conference.

Much of Nintendo’s fear around sticking with the name Wii U apparently comes from the confusion that arose when the 3DS hit the shelves. Released back in spring 2011, Nintendo‘s handheld system had many consumers believe that it was an upgrade to the DS, similar to the DSi. Now Nintendo seems to be torn between preventing this issue happening again or keeping the incredibly strong Wii brand name. Many industry professionals provided anecdotal evidence about how their casual gaming families wanted to know how they were going to be able to get HD graphics from their Wii, and this seems to be reflective of the poor way in which Nintendo presented the Wii U in its initial reveal.

Should Nintendo stick with the Wii U, or go for something different? What names would you suggest for the system? Let us know in the comments below.
