Evil Dead reboot casts leading man and leading lady

There have been some new developments in the casting of the upcoming Evil Dead reboot.

First up is Jane Levy, star of comedy TV series Suburgatory. She has been cast as Mia, a recovering drug addict, replacing Lily Collins, who was set to star in the film, but left due to scheduling conflicts. Along with Levy is Shiloh Fernandez, who recently starred in Catherine Hardwicke’s Red Riding Hood. His exact role is unconfirmed, but he’s believed to be playing Mia’s brother David.

The new reboot of The Evil Dead deals with five twenty-something friends who take a trip to a remote cabin. One of them is Mia, who is struggling to overcome her drug addiction. The cabin just so happens to house The Book of the Dead, and after one of them reads it, Mia inadvertently becomes possessed. According to Deadline, Mia “corresponds to Ash,” suggesting that besides the name, the new film might share a lot of relations to the original trilogy instead of just being a fresh new reboot.

Written and directed by Federico Alvarez, with script contributions by Diablo Cody, some have baulked at the idea of another Evil Dead film. However, unlike most reboots/remakes, this has the backing of the original film’s director (Sam Raimi), star (Bruce Campbell) and producer (Rob Tapert), with the trio producing the film through Raimi’s production company Ghost House Pictures.

The Evil Dead set for release in the US on April 13th 2013.
