Rumours Suggest Nintendo is Developing Three New Franchises for the Wii U

This morning, a new wave of Wii U rumours hit the internet. Originating at a site called forgetthebox.net, they came to them from unnamed sources (I have contacted them asking for more information on the credibility of their sources, but have yet to receive a comment).

Here’s a rundown:

  • Nintendo has plans to show 10 – 11 first and second party titles at E3, with the rest of the games shown being third party titles.
  • There are currently in excess of 70 titles in development for the Wii U.
  • By the end of 2012, four Wii U titles will be published / released by Nintendo.
  • Nintendo are considering selling the Wii U at a lower price than first planned to increase sales momentum.
  • There will be a massive wave of Wii U and 3DS titles released this holiday season to soften the losses being made on new hardware.
  • Nintendo has at least three new franchises in development, from various studios, for the Wii U. They hope to use this E3 to combat the criticisms that their key franchises have become stagnant.

Now whilst I can’t comment yet on the validity of these rumours, I think they paint an interesting image of Nintendo’s plans for the rest of the year. If Nintendo could deliver on the points made above they would likely put themselves in a very strong position going into the launch of the system.

The Wii U was also recently hyped up at last week’s Games Developers Conference, with Epic Games’ vice president Mark Rein saying of Nintendo’s new system, “I think we’ve yet to really see what the Wii U can do and I think at E3 this year they’re going to shock us.”

What do you all think? Do you think these rumours are plausible? Are there any you think would be particularly strong or weak? What would you like to see Nintendo announce at E3? Let us know in the comments below.
