K-Pop Strikes Again at MBC Korean Culture Festival

Ringing ears? A sore throat? Snatches of bubbly Korean tunes going round and round in your head? If these are your symptoms, chances are you’re one of the thousands of fans still reeling from last night’s (June 23rd) MBC Korean Culture Festival, held at London‘s IndigO2. The concert starred top K-pop bands 4Minute, EXO-K and Norazo, along with other notable stage performers. It also marked 4Minute‘s second UK visit in just six months (the first being United Cube), a sure sign that England has secured itself a place on the K-pop map. (Hooray!)

Despite a haphazard queueing system and a slightly botched seating plan, the concert itself packed a real punch. 4Minute opened with their latest single Volume Up and went on to perform favourites Mirror Mirror and Huh, while EXO-K – looking dynamic in their spangly outfits – performed hits History and Mama, the latter of which was received with ear-splitting screams. There was no time to breathe either – in between these performances the audience was treated to some explosive dance displays and even a catwalk-style presentation of traditional South Korean dress. Forget Milan – the Korean Culture Festival’s where it’s at!

For this writer, though, the greatest entertainment came in the form of two eccentric men clad in sportswear and a silly awesome hat. They were, of course, none other than comedic duo Norazo. The pair and their backing dancers brought comic relief to the stage with Superman and Sales King (watch the MV below!), Lee Hyuk‘s insane vocals earning him equally loud cheers from the crowd. They were great with their fans; at one point, main vocalist Jobin kicked a football up to the balcony and right into the arms of one lucky girl!

In a similar vein to United Cube, the concert ended with a burst of streamers and the acts were sent off with unanimous light stick-waving and applause. Once again, it looks like the smitten UK fans got what they came for and K-pop is sure to return to us in the near future. The question is: who will be next?
