Oz: The Great and Powerful – Trailer and Poster

During the San Diego Comic Con, Disney unveiled footage from their upcoming film Oz: The Great and Powerful, and wasted no time in getting the trailer online. Directed by Sam Raimi, the film starts James Franco, Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams, who were also in attendance during a panel at the event.

Creating an origin story for the Wizard of Oz, the film begins in Kansas when Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician is whisked away in a hot air balloon only to get caught up in a tornado. The next thing he knows he’s in the Land of Oz, where he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are unsure if he is the great wizard that they’ve been expecting. Drawn into their problems, Oscar tries to find out who is good and who is evil, as well as using his skills as a magician to become not just the great Wizard of Oz, but a better man as well.

The trailer starts out in full screen, black and white, only to expand to widescreen and go full colour when Oscar lands in Oz. Likely a homage to the original 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. I’ll hazard a guess that when viewing the film on the big screen, the 3D also won’t kick in till Oscar arrives in Oz (Disney employed a similar tactic with Tron Legacy). We’re also told that it’s from the producer of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Joe Roth, which might explain why it looks rather familiar. Similarly, that was a somewhat invented sequel and became a huge hit for Disney in 2010. Could Oz be another billion-dollar earner for Disney?

Oz: The Great and Powerful is set to open in the UK and US on March 8th 2013.
