‘S.H.I.E.L.D’ revealed as Joss Whedon’s Marvel TV series

Pop culture website Deadline revealed that Joss Whedon’s Marvel television project for ABC TV is currently named S.H.I.E.L.D and that a pilot episode has been given the green light. Joss is co-writing it with his brother, Jed Whedon, and his wife, Maurissa Tancharoen.

The three of them previously worked together on comedy internet miniseries Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog with Neil Patrick Harris. After past television successes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and the cult status of Firefly, hopes are high for the Whedon brother’s new series, however nothing else but the title is known about it. It seems likely that the series will focus on S.H.I.E.L.D, the organisation operating with the Avengers in the comics and movie, but whether any superheroes will feature is yet to be seen. It also seems likely that it will take place after Joss’ movie Avengers Assemble that came out earlier this year.

It’s possible that the show could centre on Nick Fury and Agent Maria Hill as they go around the world, searching for heroes to join the Avengers and fight evil. This could let them introduce a new hero or two every episode and establish each one’s backstory, setting them up for an appearance in Avengers 2 once it is released in 2015. Since Joss Whedon is so heavily involved with the Marvel cinematic universe, and seeing as how this series will presumably slot into the story that has built up over the past few years, there is a good chance that we will see some of the stars from the movies. They would struggle to do a S.H.I.E.L.D series without Samuel L. Jackson at the helm, seeing how much he’s come to embody Nick Fury for so many moviegoers. But all this is just speculation.

We will have to wait and see how this will turn out. Hopefully it will be as kick-ass as it sounds. And we can only hope that it will make its way to UK screens too. I can only take so much more X Factor before I blow my brains out.
