Aliens: Colonial Marines to feature playable female characters thanks to on-line petition

Developer Gearbox has announced at a PAX Prime panel that female characters will now be playable in both the co-op campaign and competitive multiplayer modes of Aliens: Colonial Marines.

This follows fan outrage due to claims that female characters would not be playable during the game at any point, sparking an on-line petition to be created which even garnered signatures from a number of actors and actresses who starred in the original film.

Gearbox’s Community Manager Chris F. has said that,

I am happy to be able to confirm that female marines are playable in competitive multiplayer as well as co-op, complete with customization elements. This is something the team has been planning and working on for quite some time, and that work is finally at the point where we can confirm it will indeed ship with the game when it releases on February 12, 2013.

CEO Randy Pitchford also pitched in, saying that,

I want everybody to be clear that there are playable females in both the multiplayer and the campaign,
