Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield back for Amazing Spider-Man 2

To no-one’s surprise, Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield are both back for a second Spider-Man movie. The Amazing Spider-Man made more than $751 million worldwide so it was only a matter of time before the news reached our ears. The studio is also in talks to try and get Emma Stone back on board so you can probably expect to see her back as Gwen Stacey.

Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, and Hannah Minghella, president of production made the announcement last Friday (September 28th). During the announcement Belgrad said, “We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as  Peter Parker. We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide.

The script is being worked on by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner based on a draft by James Vanderbilt (writer on the first film).

The Amazing Spider-Man suffered from the loss of a subplot. Threads were left unfinished and characters were forgotten. So it will be interesting to see if we finally get to know the truth about Peter’s parents (something we should have found out first time around). The Amazing Spider-Man is a bit of a shaky foundation to re-start a franchise, but here’s hoping that this will be a case of “the sequel is an improvement on the first.”
