Shailene Woodley in talks to play Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Following on from the news of a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man, Sony have recently begun putting out notice for some of the roles they are casting.

Variety reported that casting is beginning for the sequel, and revealed that one of the characters to be cast is Peter Parker’s love interest Mary Jane Watson.

It’s been said that actress Shailene Woodley is in talks to play Parker’s fiery red-headed love interest. Woodley can be found playing the lead role in TV show The Secret Life of the American Teenager and previously starred in 2011’s The Descendants, where she earned a Golden Globe nomination as George Clooney’s eldest daughter.

She would be an interesting fit as M.J. in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, a role previously held by Kirsten Dunst in Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. While she doesn’t have as much presence and exposure as Dunst had when she took up the role she would most certainly fit in with The Amazing Spider-Man director Marc Webb’s vision for the sequel as Mary Jane.

As well as news on the sequel looking for a Mary Jane Watson, casting buzz has also revealed that there is casting for an unknown villain and Peter Parker’s best friend Harry Osborn. There is no news on who will fill the Harry Osborn role, a character previously held by James Franco in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.

Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach will produce the film, and it will be based on a screenplay credited to Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as Jeff Pinkner, the script coming from a previous draft by James Vanderbilt.

The first movie in The Amazing Spider-Man reboot franchise did well to both walk down a similar well-known path as well as inventing ways to keep it fresh and diverse from the previous movie trilogy. The movie also enjoyed a perfect cast of actors who fit into the roles wonderfully.

What do you think? Are you familiar with Woodley’s work? Would you prefer a lesser-known/unknown actress for Mary Jane Watson or someone more established? Who would you cast as Mary Jane? Or Harry Osborn? Any theories on who the villain of the sequel could be?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is slated for a May 2nd 2014 release in cinemas. It will be available in 3D, and it will star Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. It will be directed by Marc Webb, written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner, and produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach.
