Interview with Cas Anvar the voice of Altair

Released on the 31st of October, Assassin’s Creed III is set to bring about the revolution on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Just before that however at the MCM Expo in London, the voice actor for Altair from Assassin’s Creed Revelations, Cas Anvar, took to the stage to give a talk about his experiences on being the legendary master assassin.

While Cas was able to give a panel on his experiences, I got a chance to have a one to one chat with him and talk about what it was like as the great Altair:

Liam: Firstly, thank you for giving me the chance to pester you a little more after your talk! Now your time as Altair, was this the first time you did voice acting for a game?

Cas: Yeah it was the first time where I have ever done just voice acting, and for the lead role. Initially I didn’t know! I didn’t know what I was getting into; I thought I was going to be some guy or some soldier just in the game like a terrorist or something. They just had pages of lines for me to read out.

Liam: So when did you find out who you were to be?

Cas: Well when I got home my agent called and told me, so I immediately researched the character and I was like, “Wow! Altair is a BIG thing!”

Liam: Has this ‘raised the bar’ so to speak for you? Do you look at other roles and think, ‘Yeah, but I was Altair’?

Cas: Well Assassin’s Creed has really helped put me on the map and Altair is such a role that, it’s the first thing I let companies know, so they know about me.

Liam: Now you’re a bit of a gamer aren’t you? Have you played the other Assassin’s Creed titles?

Cas: Yeah I am a big gamer and I’ve played Revelations of course. I haven’t played Assassins Creed 1 yet, but everyone I’ve mentioned it to has said that Assassin’s Creed is a franchise you have to get from the start. It’s not like Halo or Call of Duty where you can get Halo 1 or Halo 2 or 3 and just start from there. Everyone has said that Assassin’s Creed is an overall journey, and it’s one you have to start from the beginning. Especially to find out how Altair started and how it will then pan out.

Liam: I take it you have played Assassin’s Creed III then?

Cas: I got to play it at the Los Angeles convention and yeah I really liked Connor as a character. He is a lot more like Altair than Ezio, a lot more focused overall. Connor however is definitely a lot more angry and aggressive! Especially with the Tomahawk!

Liam: So as you have probably noticed as well; there are loads of HD remake games coming out. If the opportunity came up, would you try to be Altair for a recreation of Assassin’s Creed?

Cas: I would blade someone in the head for that! No seriously! (Laughs)

Liam: (Laughs) Fantastic! Overall though you have done a lot of theatre work, TV series’ as well as films, most recently working on the film Diana which is a drastically different type of role. Would you say you have a preferred workspace environment? Do you prefer working on cinema pieces?

Cas: I think the most rewarding experience is in cinema, because you get to really take your time and obviously it’s not all crammed into one day. With TV series’ it’s fun, because you get to do a character over a long period of time and really get involved with that. But I love video gaming and I think that it really is going in a direction that it’s going to be more awesome than big title films. Voice acting for video game characters is no longer just different types of ‘ouch, ouch, ouch!’ For instance, the guy with the mohawk from Far Cry, he is one of the lead roles in the game and a sociopath! And the actor has put so much into it, therefore he is getting a lot of hype because it’s his face and his work. Ubisoft are therefore sending him to talk shows and stuff to promote the game and I think that shows how games are going to become way bigger than just movies. In 2015 I think actors will be recognised for their roles in games as much as movies.

Liam: Well I must honestly state this has been a pleasure and personal honour to meet you! Thank you so much for your time!

Cas: That’s fine thank you too!

It’s not long now, so make sure you have 31st October available for Assassin’s Creed III, available on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and be prepared to fight for the revolution, but most importantly; fight for liberty!
