Jamie Foxx in talks to play Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2?

Interesting news has been coming from Hollywood recently. With the sequel to Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man charging ahead into production – including news of Shailene Woodley looking to join the sequel as love-interest Mary Jane Watson – more rumours and speculation have been getting traction regarding the sequel.

Variety reports on a more curious piece of potential casting news: Django Unchained’s Jamie Foxx has apparently been in talks to play the villain Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Electro has been rumoured to be the villain of the sequel, speculation enhanced by the prominence of lightning in The Amazing Spider-Man’s post-credit sequence – a key trademark of the character Electro.

In the Spider-Man comic books, Electro is a super-villain with the power to control electricity after he was struck by lightning. His alter ego is a Maxwell Dillon, and the character of Electro as a whole is a curious choice for the Spider-Man feature films. That said, it would be good to see more of Spider-Man’s rouges gallery outside of the ones already portrayed in the Sam Raimi-directed trilogy.

Further perpetuating to the rumour of the sequel to have an Electro played by Jamie Foxx, Foxx himself tweeted:

Whether this is a coincidence or not, Foxx would make a strong choice to play a role in the Spider-Man feature franchise, especially with the actor already having a rapport with Sony with the company distributing Django Unchained overseas as well as Foxx starring in Sony’s White House Down next year.

Time will tell as to whether this becomes a reality. What do you think about these developments? Is Electro a villain you want to see in The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Should Jamie Foxx play him? Who would you like to see cast in the sequel, and whom would they play?

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is slated for a May 2nd 2014 release in cinemas. It will be available in 3D, and it will star Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. It will be directed by Marc Webb, written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner, and produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach.
