First Look at Tom Cruise in All You Need Is Kill

Tom Cruise continues to show he’s still got it with the roles he’s been obtaining. The science fiction genre appears to be his area of interest more recently, having become attached to titles such as Our Name is AdamJoseph Kosinski’s upcoming film Oblivion, and this, All You Need Is Kill, an adaptation of the Japanese light novel of the same name.

All You Need Is Kill was originally written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and follows the story of Keiji Kiriya, a solider thrown into battle against alien invaders called Mimics, only to swiftly be killed. Instead of dying completely however, Keiji wakes up at the start of the same day, discovering he can continue the fight while stuck in a constant time loop, determined to better himself and survive.

Naturally being Hollywood, some details have been changed. For once thing, Keiji Kiriya has now become Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise). While some details in the concept have been adapted for the screen and for western audiences, the plot (described as “Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers”) generally remains the same.

Recently an image has been revealed, giving us the first look at Cruise in his role as Bill Cage wearing a bulky exoskeleton while running from a wall of fire:

There is no context for when the image takes place in the film, but it certainly offers a good look at the vision taken with the film and how Cruise’s character will look as he fights through the time loop he is stuck in. Emily Blunt also stars alongside Cruise in the film. The full plot synopsis is below:

“The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped—untrained and ill-equipped—into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop—dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.

But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.”

The entire concept of both book and film is very intriguing, and Cruise will certainly bring in some interest, as will co-star Blunt. We will have to wait until March next year to see how well the idea is realised on screen, until then we can only wait for a trailer.

All You Need Is Kill was originally a Japanese light novel written by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. The feature film adaptation stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Doug Liman directs with the screenplay written by Dante Harper, Christopher McQuarrie and Joby Harold. All You Need Is Kill is set for a March 14th 2013 release date.
