World War Z Trailer

The feature film adaptation of Max Brook’s novel World War Z has had a rather rocky production. From delays and reshoots on the Marc Forster directed film, today the world can finally see the first trailer of one of the latest films in the zombie fiction genre.

Starring Brad Pitt, the plot of World War Z is described as a film followingUnited Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself.”

Mirielle Enos plays alongside Pitt as Gerry’s wife Karen Lane while Bryan Cranston, Matthew Fox, James Badge Dale, Elyes Gabel and David Morse play other key characters.

The trailer for World War Z can be found below. Or if you prefer, Quicktime HD downloads can be found over at Apple iTunes Movie Trailers.

On first impression, the trailer provokes mixed reactions. While the set-up and concept is promising, the footage shown disappoints to a degree. The cinematic scope and interpretation of zombie hordes stampeding is certainly interesting to watch – infected humans clambering over each other like a flood of limbs flowing towards their target – but some of the effects feel a bit unimpressive.

It’s only a quick glimpse at what’s in store however, so in the actual finished movie the realisation of the zombies may be more effective. Until then, one can only hope that the implementation of CGI won’t look as jarring as seen in the trailer. There are more than enough key people working on this film, so hopefully it won’t die at the box office.

What do you think about the trailer? Is it at all how you imagined it to be reading Brook’s original novel? Are you a fan of how it looks? Is this just another case of overuse of CGI and Hollywood mistreating a treasured piece of literary fiction?

World War Z is set to be released June 21st 2013. It is an adaptation of World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War written by Max Brooks. The film stars Brad Pitt and is directed by Marc Forster. The screenplay is written by Matthew Michael Carnahan alongside re-writes by Damon Lindelof and Drew Goddard.
