Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen confirmed for X-Men: Days of Future Past

Bryan Singer has confirmed on his Twitter page that both Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are on board for the next X-Men film. There was some um-ing and ah-ing a while back over Famke Janssen and Patrick Stewart dropping hints of their return. As it turned out Famke Janssen was confirmed in a cameo role for The Wolverine and now Patrick Stewart is back too along with Ian McKellen.

Thrilled to announce @ianmckellen118 &@SirPatStew are joining the cast of #XMEN#DaysOfFuturePast #magneto #professorXMore to come…

He also officially welcomed back James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and Nicholas Hoult. If you’re wondering how the new cast can share a film with the old cast then you might want to familiarise yourself with the synopsis for the original comics below.

The storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps. The present-day X-Men are forewarned of the possible future by a future version of their teammate Kitty Pryde, whose mind traveled back in time and possessed her younger self to warn the X-Men.

An official synopsis for the film is yet to be released. At this point there hasn’t even been mention of Kitty Pryde or Wolverine (who shares the cover of the comic with her). Wolverine seems unlikely to be involved in the story at this point, otherwise news would have leaked somewhere. And it would seem more likely that Kitty’s role is passed on to a character already established as a part of the team. But we’ll have to wait and see to know for sure.
