John McClane is a little bit crazy in new trailer for A Good Day to Die Hard

Set to open next month, 20th Century Fox have released an insanely bombastic trailer for the fifth film in the Die Hard franchise, A Good Day to Die Hard. Since the third film Die Hard with a Vengeance, John McClane has always had a reluctant partner. This time he has his son Jack, played by Jai Courtney.

It doesn’t seem to give much in the way of story, but the basic gist involves John McClane (Bruce Willis) travelling to Moscow to meet his son Jack (Jai Courtney). Once there he finds out that he’s actually a CIA operative who has been working undercover to stop a group of Russian terrorists, led by the carrot chomping Alik (Radivoje Bukvic) who hates everything about Americans. Obviously the stakes are upped given that the terrorists intend to do a lot of damage with nuclear weapons.

The trailer features a few knowing nods, referencing the franchise and just how far John McClane has come (“It’s old school, like you,” says Jack as his father picks up what he calls “a pirate gun.”). The action borders upon the fantastically crazy, with the expected explosions and car crashes. The explosive closing shot couldn’t be more ‘money shot’ unless it digitally added $100 dollar bills floating down with the lead heroes. Note the elevator music that just so happens to be Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, a piece of music that has managed appear in at least one of the marketing trailers for every single Die Hard film; which also kicks into overdrive during the final action montage.
