Joseph Gordon-Levitt is proving to be the gift that keeps on giving. Thrown back into resurgence after the well-received (500) Days of Summer, he has since been part of many a lucrative hit. Since the 2009 anti-rom-com, Gordon-Levitt has been in films such as Inception, 50/50, The Dark Knight Rises, Looper and Lincoln. To star in those five movies alone is unprecedented, and yet JGL is one of Hollywood’s hottest current commodities.
More recently his name has been thrown about in regards to many an enticing project, such as Justice League and the new Godzilla movie, not to mention James Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel. It seems however that JGL has passed on at least Godzilla and Guardians of the Galaxy, with the recent announcement of the next film project he’ll be in: Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For.
Sin City 2 is the long in-development sequel to the visually gorgeous Sin City from 2005. Both films are adapted from the original Sin City graphic novels written by Frank Miller, who co-wrote and co-directed the original film. Miller also joins director Robert Rodriguez on the sequel. The first film showcased a visually striking style, with fantastic uses of harsh black and whites highlighted by iconic colouring, all the while implementing a dialogue and narrative trademark to Miller’s writing.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Johnny, a cocky gambler harbouring a grudge against a sworn enemy. His character is one that will help tie together all the inter-weaving plot threads, in a role was once written for Johnny Depp. When speaking of his decision to join the project – which has already been filming, aiming for an October 2013 release date in 3D – JGL said:
“I love how the first movie uses VFX, not to make fake things look real, but to create a heightened world unburdened by the look and feel of reality. Plus, nobody makes a badass like Mr. Rodriguez.”
All very true. Robert Rodriguez has always had a distinctive style to his movies, and his fingerprints are all over the first Sin City and will no-doubt be all over the sequel, having co-written and directed, not to mention doing the cinematography and editing, even having a hand in making the music.
Sin City 2 is most certainly a passion project for Rodriguez, and despite other projects and delays getting in the way, everything is now going full steam ahead for the movie, and JGL’s casting leads to yet another piece of the puzzle sliding neatly in. Look out for this one, it’s going to be a heck of a ride.
Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill for is set for an October 4th 2013 release date in the US, with no UK release date announced. It has an all-star cast, including Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Clive Owen, Rosario Dawson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It is directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, and written by Rodriguez, Miller and William Monahan.
