The Wind Waker HD Remake Announced for Wii U

During the Nintendo Direct presentation today (January 23rd), Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced, among other things, that an HD remake of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is being developed for the Wii U.

Iwata explained that while a brand new Zelda game is in the works, it will take a while for it to be ready to show. But, to tide us over, we are being given a remake of one of the best-loved games of the GameCube era. They released some early screens from the game as well.

Regarding the new Zelda game, Iwata had this to say:
“Our mission in developing this new Zelda game for Wii U is quite plainly to rethink the conventions of Zelda. I’m referring to things like the expectation that the player is supposed to complete dungeons in a certain order, or that you’re supposed to play by yourself. The things that we’ve come to take for granted recently.”

From the sound of it, we might be getting a multiplayer, open-world Zelda! I, for one, am excited. Also announced was a spiritual successor to the charming Kirby’s Epic Yarn for Wii. This time, another Nintendo icon has entered the world of fabric and thread: Yoshi!

The Nintendo Direct presentation can be watched in full right here. As well as all this, there are some updates on the Miiverse and Virtual Console, a new trailer for The Wondeful 101 and a short video of Platinum Games working on the Wii U exclusive title Bayonetta 2.
