Shailene Woodley cast as Hazel in The Fault in Our Stars

Shailene WoodleyPost-The Descendants, Shailene Woodley has slowly been amassing a collection of highly vied-over roles. From playing Mary-Jane Watson in upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to playing Beatrice Prior in the upcoming adaptation Divergent, tonight saw the announcement of yet another lucrative role.

Entertainment Weekly was the first to break news that Shailene Woodley would soon be playing Hazel Grace Lancaster in the upcoming adaptation of John Green’s YA novel The Fault in Our Stars. It had been long rumoured that Woodley was sought for the part, but it wasn’t until after auditioning against 250 actresses and proving her merits when it was confirmed she would be the actress for the role.

The Fault in Our Stars is the New York Times bestselling novel written by John Green, following the evolving relationship between two teenagers who meet in a cancer support group and fall in love. Outside of being a critically acclaimed novelist, Green can be found across the Internet, especially but not limited to his exploits on YouTube under the VlogBrothers channel. Here he collaborates with his brother Hank Green making incredibly popular, entertaining and insightful videos watched by over a million subscribers.

The book is one held very highly by critics and readers alike, showing the very peak of Green’s writing as of present. With the world full of adaptations like The Hunger Games, Twilight and beyond, it was only a matter of time until Green’s work would also be given the treatment. While his previous books have all been attached to adaption projects, The Fault in Our Stars looks to be the best bet so far.

It wasn’t that long ago when the director of the project was announced. Director Josh Boone is attached, working on a script penned by (500) Days of Summer scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber. The film is produced by Wyck Godfrey, who has experience with producing adaptations, having produced every one of the Twilight movies.

In light of the recent casting announcement, John Green took to Twitter to once again gush about his appreciation for the project:

Wyck Godfrey also had something to say about the current progress of the project:

“When choosing the writers, director and now our first actor for Fault we’ve gone with the people that have had the strongest, most emotional and insightful connection to the material. Shailene’s love of the book and dedication to the character was evident in not only her pursuit of the role but her delivery of the essence of Hazel in her audition. I have no doubt that she will deliver a Hazel that will floor both fans of the book and those who have yet to be introduced to the transcendent story of The Fault in Our Stars.”

Overall it looks like The Fault in Our Stars is going to get the adaptation that it should have. It is coming from a novel cherished by readers young and old. It is funny, effective, moving, passionate and intelligent, one that shows that not all adaptations have to rely on effects or the supernatural for its hook. It’s a love story at the heart of things, but it also speaks of life, friendship, family, growing up, facing the end and facing new beginnings.

It still remains however to find out who will play Augustus Waters. As it stands it would have to be a truly remarkable actor to nail the character of Hazel ’s wonderfully charming and near-perfect love interest, but the way things are going in regards to putting the pieces together, it’s far from impossible.
