Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in The Avengers 2 Script

A few days ago Joss Whedon teased about the Avengers 2 script and its possible new characters saying, “I’ve got these two characters, two of my favourite characters from the comic book, a brother-sister act.” Naturally rumours flew that this could possibly mean Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

EW recently received confirmation that this is indeed true. However, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige isn’t quite ready to properly confirm things himself. “I’m not confirming or denying,” he said. “The draft could change six months from now.”

Just to clarify, this confirmation is that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are in the script as of now. But there is a possibility that all of that might change in the next few months. If the script doesn’t lose them along the way then this is pretty exciting news. These two are incredibly important characters and Scarlet Witch especially has been a major factor in many of the comics’ big storylines.

Their powers are also different enough from the current heroes that it should keep things interesting. Quicksilver is essentially Marvel‘s version of Flash (he can run really, really fast.) And Scarlet Witch has the power to control probability with “hexes”. Although her powers have been tweaked a bit over the years and it’s now assumed she can alter reality. As an example “House of M” found her rebuilding the entire world so that everyone got their dreams to come true and mutants were the dominant species on the planet.

Now anyone that reads the Marvel news closely might be wondering how these two can even be in an Avengers movie. They’re mutants and are often thought as being a part of the X-Men franchise (which is currently with Fox).

Well this pair are sort of an exception in the sense that they toe the line between X-Men and Avengers. This means they can be used by either company at this point. All Marvel have to do is not mention mutants or the fact that Magneto is their father or anything else too X-Men-ish.

We’ll be sure to keep a close eye on this one. What are your thoughts on this development?
