Joss Whedon talks about Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and Iron Man

Joss Whedon spoke to IGN recently and confirmed that the brother and sister duo he’d previously spoken of were in fact Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Which means we’ll be seeing them in Avengers 2 in 2015. When asked about them Joss Whedon said the following:

“You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.”

It’ll be interesting to see how these two get introduced into the world of the Avengers. Especially for the Scarlet Witch who spends so much of her time as an outsider and has been the cause of many big changes in the Marvel Universe. Let the casting rumours commence!

Spoiler Warning for Iron Man 3

The conversation with Joss soon turned to the subject of Iron Man.

“Well, I feel like in Iron Man 3, even though he said, ‘I’ve changed’ — he blew up his remote suits, but I don’t think anybody thinks he doesn’t have one anymore. The question is, if The Avengers are called, does he show up? And the answer is, ‘Yes!’”

Before we get excited about that let’s remember that the majority of the cast is still in talks with Marvel. It seems as if the entire world is waiting to hear word on whether or not Robert Downey Jr. is returning.

Agents of SHIELD stills_03Last time anyone spoke to Kevin Feige about the Avengers 2 script he pointed out that things could very well change later on. However I’m inclined to believe that the script is pretty much complete at this point (not counting mid-production re-writes).

Why do I think that? Well we’ve got two years until Avengers 2, the same amount of time Joss had when he was picked to direct the first Avengers. And on the director’s commentary for the film, Joss mentioned what a mad rush it was to get everything done. So it would make sense if Joss Whedon wants to give himself more leg room this time around.

If this is indeed the case then what does this mean for Iron Man? It sounds like Joss really wants him for Avengers 2, whether he’s played by Robert Downey Jr. or not.

Obviously we would all love to see Downey Jr. come back, even if it was just for one last Avengers movie. However, the reactions to the casting rumours are quite perplexing so let me take this chance to get something straight.

There are some names in cinema that will always come back because they’re worth too much not to use. There will always be Superman movies, Batman movies and Spider-Man movies. After the huge success of Iron Man, it’s fair to say that the studios won’t let a character that valuable go to waste.

At some point in the future, (maybe two years, maybe four or six) we will have another Iron Man and he won’t be played by Robert Downey Jr. Sorry guys but at this point it’s just a fact. Unless we can find the fountain of youth and force RDJ to sign a contract written by Ursula or something.
