Cloudberry Kingdom Wii U Preview

url2Cloudberry Kingdom is possibly the most exciting Wii U game on show at this weekend’s MCM London Comic Con. Starting its life as a Kickstarter project for PC, and achieving funding as a Wii U game as a stretch goal, the game is a procedurally generated 2D platformer that delights in being unfeasibly hard. Picture the most spectacularly difficult bullet hell shooter you’ve seen, add in moving platforms and jump your way to an exit.

The game’s levels are all procedurally generated, meaning that the game creates a level that it deems the right difficulty based on your progress, but that level will be different each time. Having played through the demo a couple of times, I can confirm that not being able to rely on muscle memory certainly added an extra level of challenge to replaying an already tough game.

By about ten levels in I was already starting to hit huge difficulty walls. The game has an instant restart for the level and gives you plenty of lives to mess around with which encourages experimentation to achieve progress, but you’ll not find it long before there are hidden spikes, flaming wheels, attacking monsters and hard to make jumps all crammed into the same segment of a level, which requires real dedication to progress past.

This is not a platformer for the faint of heart. If Cloudberry Kingdom does one thing well, then it pushes the hardcore platforming gamer to their limits. Give it a go if you’re at the show, it’s the most exciting Wii U game on my radar.
