Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D Preview

donkey-kong-country-returns-rev-2.0_cinema_640.0Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii, but on your 3DS. It’s lost some texture resolution, gained a 3D slider, but otherwise what I saw on the show floor today at the MCM London Comic Con was just that, for better or worse.

Donkey Kong Country Returns on Wii was a visually updated port of the SNES classic, praised on release for its difficulty and tight controls. The 3DS port maintains these completely intact, the Circle Pad maintaining the Wii Control Stick’s responsiveness, and the game controls and plays just as well as both the SNES and Wii versions that came before it.

In terms of visuals, the game makes great use of the system’s 3D effects. From layered backgrounds with silhouettes off in the distance, to defeated enemies flying towards the screen, the 3D effect definitely does add to the experience.

However, in the journey from Wii to 3DS, the game had lost a certain amount of its crispness in terms of its texture models. Donkey Kong Country Returns pushed the Wii to its visual limits, but I don’t get that same feeling from the 3DS port. It looks good in still screens, but when moving the texture blur becomes considerably more noticable.

To put it simply, this is Donkey Kong Country. If you want 3D visuals and portability then you’ll not be disappointed, but don’t come to this version for the best looking version of the game around.
