Karen Gillan Cast in Guardians of the Galaxy

Karen Gillan

The cast for Guardians of the Galaxy just keeps on getting bigger. Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana head up the main cast (so far) as The Star Lord, Drax the Destroyer and Gamora. Now we’ve discovered that Karen Gillan has signed on to play a female villain. Who that villain is we don’t know yet but it’s certainly a fun casting choice!

The casting of Zoe Saldana alone was cause for excitement. Not only is she one of the biggest names attached at the moment but she’s an excellent actress capable of really pushing her emotions. Plus after working with the motion capture in Avatar, slapping on some green make-up should be easy enough.

“I’m in the process right now of the evolution of conceiving Gamora’s look. It’s exciting! We’re trying to work out comfort also, because you know that I definitely want to be involved in the stunt-doing of my character.”

A couple of days ago Glenn Close also joined the cast. Her character name wasn’t revealed but we do know that she will play a leader with Nova Corp, the intergalactic space patrol. John C. Reilly has also been mentioned, though not confirmed. However it was hinted that he might possibly play an Agent Coulson type character, bridging the gap between S.H.I.E.L.D and the Guardians.

The decision to make a Guardians of the Galaxy film was a bold move by Marvel. It’s very unlike anything else in the Marvel Movie Universe so far and no doubt will have the average cinema goer wondering how it even relates to the Marvel films they know.

The people behind Guardians certainly seem to be making some great choices with their casting that will hopefully pay off in the end. The only big question left is “Who will play Rocket Raccoon?” He’s an odd character and one that has to be done well, otherwise the film risks coming off as too ridiculous.

Guardians of the Galaxy is being directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Glenn Close and Karen Gillan and is due for release August 2014.
