Jack is Back. The New and Old in Fable: The Lost Chapters HD

Fable The Lost Chapters (Jack)Following from a short teaser video, it was announced by Lionhead Studios that the beloved (is it still too early to say classic?) Xbox title Fable: The Lost Chapters will be remade for the Xbox 360. PC gamers will be disappointed that it is not currently in development for any other platform, yet Lionhead also said in their recent FAQ that it has not been ruled out for the future.

Upon their official announcement Lionhead also linked to a podcast from lead designer on the remake Ted Timmins, who shed some light on how the game will be brought to the Xbox 360. Firstly, Timmins spoke on how the game will be the first time that fans can earn gamerscore for their journey into Albion, and hinted that many of these will be based upon your decisions in the game. He stated that “Fable has always been about choice and consequence and we’re trying to put that into our achievements,” which will certainly motivate multiple playthroughs of the game.

In addition to this Timmins spoke about how the game will be updated for the modern gaming experience, with some exciting new features being proposed. The user interface is receiving a complete overhaul, and it was suggested that the controls will be similar to Fable 2 and 3 in the 360 edition. New HD cutscenes are being made, which is exciting to hear for any fan of the series, especially when they are described as “much more up to what you expect from modern standards“. A new save system will also be implemented.

One of the more innovative features described is the title’s SmartGlass integration. SmartGlass will be able to connect to your console when playing Fable: The Lost Chapters and access a map, or even take a screenshot of the game from the device. TheLionhead designer seems to want SmartGlass to become more of a companion throughout the game than an unnecessary add-on. Xbox Live leaderboards will be introduced for various aspects of the game including the never-tiresome chicken kicking, yet there are no plans to develop a multiplayer for the game.

Lionhead are definitely confident about their remake, and the features and information provided so far are promising, the largest challenge for the game will be that it will be released very close to the release of the Xbox One. This could be a problem because the Xbox One is not backwards compatible with 360 games, meaning that many could have moved on and not be enthusiastic about returning to the 360 when so many other next generation games are available. Saying that, however, when playing a remake the value is in revisiting that experience and feeling nostalgia regardless of platform.

What do you think about the remake? Is it on the right platform? Is it too early for a 360 remake when the original game can be played on the console? Let us know by commenting.

Fable: The Lost Chapters HD is set to be released in Q4 2013 for the Xbox 360.
