New Characters Revealed for Super Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS

After being treated to the big E3 Nintendo Direct presentation we saw new games announced, such as Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8 and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Also new details were given on Bayonetta 2, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Pokemon X/Y. But the most exciting thing on show for most people was the next installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, coming to Wii U and 3DS. The first ever trailer was shown, featuring new stages and (more importantly) new characters. Three new playable combatants have been announced so far.

super-smash-bros-revealed-at-e3-2013-animal-crossing-s-villagerStraight from Animal Crossing, it’s the Villager! The trailer sees him recieving an invitation in the post (presumably asking him to be in the game) and he dashes off immediately. As with all Smash Bros. characters, his move set has been faithfully transferred from the games he comes from. He can ensnare opponents in his butterfly net, bury them in the pits and drop plant pots on them. The Animal Crossing games are not known for their violence (although Mr. Resetti is pretty intimidating) so it will be interesting to see how he fits in to the all-punching, all-kicking world of Smash Bros. Interestingly, when the Villager drops his invitation at the start of the trailer, Tom Nook (Animal Crossing’s resident real estate agent and loan shark) looks down curiously at it. Is this a hint at another playable character? Only time will tell…

mega-man-smash-brosHere’s one fans have been crying out for. What with the cancellation of Mega Man Legends 3 for 3DS, it seemed that Capcom had given up on their beloved Blue Bomber. But an appearance in Smash Bros. will shoot him back into the limelight where he belongs. Accompanied by awesome electric guitar riffs of famous themes from the series, Mega Man bursts onto the battlefield. Over the years, he has taken a lot of moves from Dr. Wily’s evil Master Bots and he can switch between them all here. The Metal Blade, Crash Bomber, Leaf Shield, Flame Sword and Slash Claw are all in attendance, among many others (including a power-up from the unfortunately-named ‘Hard Man’). There’s even an appearance by Mega Man’s trusty spring-dog-thing Rush! The trailer ends with Mega Man facing off against Yellow Devil, one of the final bosses in the original game (and the cause of much swearing on my part while fighting against him), possibly as a boss in the game’s story mode. Whether these weapon changes will all be available at once or whether you will have to choose one before a fight remains to be seen.

e3-2013-wii-fit-trainer-joins-super-smash-bros-rosterNow this is a weird one. Over the years, Nintendo has created countless infinitely creative worlds in its various video game franchises. The yoga studio from Wii Fit is not one of them. So the Wii Fit Trainer is certainly a strange choice to fight alongside such greats as Mario, Link and Samus. But there’s something hilarious about watching her kick some butt in the latest trailer, released after the Nintendo Direct. She uses yoga positions, hula hoops and warm-up exercises to lay the smack-down, with a Final Smash that involves blasting out a variety of multi-coloured silhouette clones of herself to hit opponents. And her svelte figure rivals that of Zero-Suit Samus (well, maybe). The strange thing is, this has got me way more interested in exercise than Wii Fit itself ever did.

Remember, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Many more characters are set to be announced up until the game’s release in 2014. Keep an eye on the official Smash Bros. website for all the latest information and trailers. As for me, I’m still holding out hope for Waluigi (though the Wii Fit Trainer’s restraining order against him makes this unlikely).
