Emma Watson to be Crowned “Queen of the Tearling”

It’s been confirmed this weekend that Emma Watson will be reuniting with Harry Potter producer, David Heyman, for a new Warner Brothers fantasy film.

heyman2The Queen of the Tearling, in which Watson will play an idealistic 19-year-old princess called Kelsea Glynn, is to be based on a seven-part series of novels currently being written by Erika Johnson.

Although not yet published (the first book is due out next year), Johnson’s series has garnered masses of attention since she first signed a deal with publishers, HarperCollins, in February. Already, Warner Brothers has bought film rights to all seven novels, and the plot has elicited comparisons with that of George R.R. Martin‘s best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire novels, as well as their TV adaptation, Game of Thrones. In particular, Kelsea Glynn‘s story arc seems strikingly similar to that of GoT princess Daenerys Targaryen, leading HarperCollins to describe The Queen of the Tearling as a “female-oriented Game of Thrones” in its official press release. According to the HarperCollins website, Kelsea, “must reclaim her deceased mother’s throne and redeem her kingdom, the Tearling, from forces of corruption and dark magic of The Red Queen, the sorceress-tyrant of the neighboring country, Mortmesne.

danInterestingly, however, the story may feature more contemporary political resonances than we’re used to seeing from Game of Thrones, since the character of Kelsea was reportedly partly inspired by a 2007 Barack Obama speech. We also know that the story is set three years after an environmental catastrophe, perhaps suggesting that it occurs not in a fantasy past, but rather in an imagined future.

So far, no writer or director has been attached to the film, but The Mary Sue is predicting Heyman’s involvement will result in other former Harry Potter actors being cast. Who would you like to see returning to the screen with Watson?
