Poster and Trailer for Spike Lee’s Oldboy

Oldboy ver2 (One Sheet poster)The marketing has begun on Spike’s Lee Oldboy, with FilmDistrict having released a poster and a trailer.

This version of Oldboy follows Joe Doucett (Josh Brolin), an advertising executive who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in a private prison. Upon being released he sets out to discover who had him imprisoned and why.

An adaptation of the manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, it’s very clear from both the trailer and the poster that Lee is also incorporating elements from Park Chan-Wook’s 2003 film.

Click to enlarge the poster, which itself is a still from the film, with the title in Josh Brolin’s handwriting. The symbols on the umbrella held by the mysterious figure in the distance is also a clever touch.

The trailer retains an aura of mystery suggesting that there might be something new here for those that already know the story (a fedora wearing caller with no face?). Be warned that this is a red band trailer so there is some bad language, some violent activity involving a hammer and… Samuel L. Jackson sporting a white mohawk.

Adapted by Mark Protosevich’s, the film also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, Michael Imperioli and Samuel L. Jackson.

Oldboy opens in the US on 25 October and is scheduled for release in the UK on 6 December.

Oldboy is up there as one of the best films ever made. Fact. Beautifully filmed, an amazing story and great acting. I just hope the remake does it justice.
