It’s been three long years since NBC‘s Heroes last graced our television screens, so fans of the show will be delighted to hear that the franchise is making a comeback – this time in comic book form.
A new comics series featuring the show’s cast of unlikely superhero characters has been commissioned by Dynamite Entertainment, and will be written by Cullen Bunn, best known for his work on horror/western series The Sixth Gun, as well as on various other Oni and Marvel titles. Rather than simply following the story of the television series, however, the comics will take familiar characters in interesting new directions, according to a press release given by Dynamite in anticipation of the upcoming San Diego Comic Con. Bunn himself has also emphasised the differences between his comics and the original show, whilst expressing his admiration for the series:
“Like so many others, I was a huge fan of Heroes during its original run. I was drawn to a cast of characters with interesting back stories and development, a setting boiling over with potential, and — of course — the exploration of superpowers in a ‘real’ world scenario. With this book, I have the opportunity to contribute to the mythology of the series in a way that will surprise readers. When I was watching the show, I never could have imagined the direction I’d be taking the story. The narrative I’m developing will be multi-layered, complex, and character-focused, and it will shake up the Heroes storyline in a major way. I don’t think anyone is expecting what we have in store for Claire, Hiro, Peter, Niki, Sylar, and the rest of the gang.”
It will be interesting to see how Bunn builds on the characters and their stories, not only from the television series, but also in the existing webcomics series (accessible via the NBC website). On the downside, of course, coupled with other acting commitments for key cast members, it makes the possibility of a TV reboot seem increasingly remote.
As has been noted elsewhere, it seems a little odd that it’s taken so long for this to happen. Doubtless, however, these comics will be eagerly anticipated by many.
