Firefly to Return – Fox Announces New Online Game

To all you Joss Whedon fans who have been waiting and hoping these many years for a return of the all too short-lived Firefly series, a little something was revealed at San Diego Comic Con which might help to fill the gaping Captain Mal-shaped holes in your lives.

MalReynoldsFireflyBefore you get your hopes up too high, it’s not a new series. Unfortunately, it’s not even a film. But on the upside, it is something that will enable you to enter into and interact with the characters’ world for yourself. Who wouldn’t be excited about that?

Fox has now announced what it’s calling a “multi-user social role-playing game” (meanwhile everyone else is sticking to “MMO), entitled Firefly Online, to be released for mobile devices in 2014. Better yet, in the extremely likely event that it sells well, they have also promised us a PC version.

So far, there’s no word about Joss Whedon’s involvement, but we do know that the game is being developed by Spark Plug Games, creators of the successful Puzzle Quest 2.

Below is the trailer that was shown at SDCC. It has some details about the essential aims of the game, though doesn’t really feature any gameplay footage. Still, it’s got spaceships, and it’s definitely official – how far wrong could it go?
