More Warner Brothers Wizards – New Merlin Movie Announced

After the enormous success of their Harry Potter film franchise, Warner Bros. has announced a return to the wizarding world with a new movie all about Merlin – which is apparently nothing to do with the recent BBC drama series.

The-Lost-Years-of-Merlin-Book-CoverAlready involved in the project are scriptwriters Dave Hill (Game of Thrones) and David Farr, known mainly for his work in theatre. We’ve also been given a brief synopsis which hints at what we can expect:

The film will trace Merlin’s journey from being a boy washed on the shores of Wales with no memory and no home, to him becoming a young man learning to use his powers and ultimately defender of the natural world and eventual mentor to King Arthur.

Judging from this, the film looks likely to be a kind of Merlin origins story, possibly an adaptation of T. A. Barron’s five-book series, The Lost Years of Merlin which, according to Screen Rant, was optioned back in 2011.

So far, we know that Warner Bros. are treating this project as a “top priority” and, as a result, there are already whispers that it’s intended to rival major young adult franchises like Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games. Whether or not it’s capable of matching their success, however, remains to be seen.
