Subtitled Trailer for Studio Ghibli’s The Wind Rises (Kaze Tachinu)

The Wind Rises (Jiro)

Studio Ghibli’s latest, The Wind Rises (Kaze Tachinu), will be playing at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, and they’ve put together a subtitled trailer.

It’s mostly the same footage that was released before the film opened in Japan (with Yumi Arai’s “Hikōki Gumo” playing), but hopefully the words will allow us viewers to gain a little more understanding to what we’re seeing.

Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi (voiced by Hideaki Anno). After arriving in Tokyo to study aeronautical engineering, Jiro finds himself helping the young girl Nahoko Satomi (voiced by Miori Takimoto) during the aftermath of the Great Kanto earthquake. Following his gradation Jiro gets a job at an aircraft company and subsequently ends up designing the World War II Mitsubishi Zero Fighter plane.

The film is based on Miyazaki’s own manga which was published in Model Graphix magazine in 2009, and on Tatsuo Hori’s novel of the same name.

Released in Japan on 20 July, The Wind Rises has so far spent four weeks at the top spot at the Japanese box office, and has currently earned ¥5.6 billion ($57 million).

There’s no sign of an official UK release yet, but that’s bound to change after it’s played the festivals.
