WinterSoldier

An official synopsis has been released for The Winter Soldier, the upcoming sequel to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. The new film, which is scheduled for release next year, still has no trailer, but we now know the names of a few of the actors and characters set to be involved, as well as some of the details of the plot. Marvel’s official outline is below:

“After the cataclysmic events in New York with The Avengers, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier finds Steve Rogers – aka Captain America – living quietly in Washington, DC, and trying to adjust to the modern world. But when a S.H.I.E.L.D. colleague comes under attack, Steve becomes embroiled in a web of intrigue that threatens to put the world at risk. Joining forces with the Black Widow, Captain America struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off professional assassins sent to silence him at every turn. When the full scope of the villainous plot is revealed, Captain America and the Black Widow enlist the help of a new ally, the Falcon. However, they soon find themselves up against an unexpected and formidable enemy – the Winter Soldier.”

Agent Maria Hill in the Avengers movie, will also appear in the film, prompting speculation that she may be the S.H.I.E.L.D. colleage who “comes under attack”.

In an IGN interview, Smulders commented on the possibility of a future Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television show and discussed her role in the Captain America movie:

“Yeah, the world is a very unstable place. You know, there’s so much I can’t say… It’s very hard. But Cap and Romanoff are basically Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and they go off and do one thing. We’re overseeing everything, and there’s a communication breakdown… I can’t say anything! But it is very much about S.H.I.E.L.D. — it’s all about S.H.I.E.L.D., basically. But there are so many different components to that agency. Maria plays a small part in the S.H.I.E.L.D. universe, but I like to think an important one. We’ll see.”

Elsewhere, Anthony Mackie has described his character as more of a “tactical expert than a birdman from Harlem”, drawn mainly from later editions of the Falcon comics. He has also hinted that this film will be much less CGI-heavy than Avengers Assemble, since directors Anthony and Joe Russo preferred to stick to live action where possible.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is scheduled for US release on 4th April 2014 and is set to open in the UK on 2nd May 2014.
