Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard to Star in Macbeth Movie

A new See Saw Films adaptation of Macbeth is due to start filming in the UK early next year, with Snowtown director Justin Kurzel at the helm.

RochesterFassbendCropThe title role will be taken on by Michael Fassbender, whose proven range and intensity as a performer render him an exciting choice for the part. Fassbender is of course no stranger to literary adaptations, having starred as Mr Rochester in 2011’s Jane Eyre film.

Natalie Portman was originally intended to co-star as his wife, but the infamous part of Lady Macbeth has since been given instead to Marion Cotillard. Chris Nolan fans may well notice certain parallels between this new part and her previous role in The Dark Knight Rises – both characters are behind-the-scenes villainesses of sorts, grand orchestrators of events whose hapless lovers do most of their dirty work for them.

The film will be financed primarily by British and French companies Film4 and StudioCanal. It seems See Saw will be opting for a relatively straightforward, traditional retelling, based on their own description of the feature as,

“a thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a truthful reimagining of what wartime must have really been like for one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters.

A story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war-torn 11th Century Scotland.”
