James Spader cast as Ultron in Avengers sequel

UltronCast1Marvel have just offered up some information on their highly secretive plans for the eagerly anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron, announcing that Emmy-Award winning actor James Spader is set to play the titular villain. Spader has starred in a number of critically acclaimed films over the years, most recently Steven Spielberg‘s Oscar winning historical drama, Lincoln, in which he portrayed William N. Bilbo, whilst outside of film Spader is famous for his role as charismatic protagonist Alan Shore in hit television drama Boston Legal.

Spader will portray the villainous robot Ultron, who in the Marvel comic books was created by scientist Hank Pym, also known as Ant-Man, who is rumored to be part of Edgar Wright‘s upcoming film outing for the character. However, director Joss Whedon recently specified that his adaption of Ultron will not be tied to Pym, commenting: “We’re crafting our own version of it where his origin comes more directly from The Avengers we already know about. It’s a little bit darker than the other film because Ultron is in the house. There’s a science-fiction theme that wasn’t there in the other one. Ultron is definitely something that evolves, so we’re going to get together a couple of different iterations. Nothing can be translated exactly as at was from the comics; particularly Ultron.

Adding even more intrigue into what exactly fans can expect from his version of Ultron, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Whedon added that, “He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’re going to have to take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [a new character, Scarlet Witch] who’s a witch.” This would imply that Whedon wants to “ground” his Ultron whilst still “evoking” the iconic villain from the comics.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is currently set to release in May 2015 by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Keep an eye out here for more news on this highly anticipated film as it comes!
