New Harry Potter Movies to Venture into J.K Rowling’s Wizarding World

Recently it seemed as though the next time fans of the Harry Potter books and films would be able to revisit his magical world on the big screen would be in a franchise reboot at some point in years to come. But, in a surprise press release today Warner Brothers Entertainment‘s Chief Executive Officer Kevin Tsujihara announced plans for a new movie series exploring other corners of the wizarding world!

FBB1The first of these pictures, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, will mark series creator J.K Rowling’s “screenwriting debut” and promises to feature “magical creatures and characters, some of which will be familiar to devoted Harry Potter fans”. Rowling commented that “although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years” the film “is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world“. The protagonist of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be a character yet to make their film debut, Newt Scamander, the “supposed” author of the monster manual that Rowlingalready knew a lot about“. His new story will involve “the laws and customs of the hidden magical society” that are “familiar” to those that have read the Harry Potter books or watched the films, but will “start in New York City, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway“, meaning we could get a look into how the world of magic existed in years gone by, offering even more new ground for the film to cover.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was originally published in 2001 to benefit Comic Relief alongside its companion Quidditch Through the Ages, raising over £17 million. With the aforementioned plans for a new film series set in the larger Potter world and Rowling looking to expand on one of these spin-off titles, could there also be room for a Quidditch themed film in the future?

As with past Potter adventures, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be a cross media venture spanning video games, consumer products and digital mediums including J.K Rowling‘s Pottermore experience linked to the world and stories of Harry Potter. As if that wasn’t enough, this expansion of the studio’s partnership with Rowling also includes visitor attractions at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Parks and Resorts, meaning that there’s the likelihood of parts of the new film series making the jump from fantasy to reality and plenty of new treats for Potter fans!
