After giving the green light last week to Breaking Bad spin-off Last Call Saul, the brains behind the zombies at AMC have announced yet another companion series, this time to their latest massive international success story, The Walking Dead.

TheWalkingDeadDue to air in 2015, this new franchise extension will share executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert with its parent series, and will provide its creatives with opportunities to go beyond Kirkman’s original comics, imagining entirely new stories and characters. As yet, the series remains unnamed, but the folks at AMC are already justifiably excited about its possibilities. Said AMC president Charles Collier, “It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Writer and producer Robert Kirkman has also expressed his enthusiasm about exploring a new side of the world he created:

zombie“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

The decision will hardly come as a surprise to fans of the series. The show’s last season (Season 3), was ranked as the most popular television programme amongst adults aged 18-49 in the US, and has already spawned a talk show spin-off, Talking Dead. In Charles Collier‘s own words, “Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer.”

The Walking Dead Season 4 begins on Sunday 13 October in the States. What stories would you like to see explored in the new series?
