20th Century Fox and Boom! Studios Make Innovative Rights Deal

As the worlds of comic books, movies and TV shows increasingly intertwine, it’s perhaps unsurprising to see studios and publishers looking for exciting new ways of teaming up on projects. Both DC and Marvel are of course already partnered with big-name studios Warner Bros. and Disney, but an innovative deal announced earlier this week has seen 20th Century Fox and Boom! Studios potentially redesign the way comics rights deals work, especially for indie comics companies.

2_guns_movie_2013_desktop_wallpaper-t2Boom! Studios currently publish the popular Adventure Time and 2 Guns series, the latter of which was made into an action hit film released this summer, starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg. Stephen Christy, editor of Boom!’s Archaia imprint, already has several books lined up for adaptation by Fox, including robot adventure comic Rust, with Rio‘s Carlos Saldanha attached as director.

The new deal stands to benefit the comics’ creators enormously, with Boom! being given first-dollar gross on any movie adaptations of its work. These earnings will then be divided evenly between the comics’ publishers and creatives. Perhaps even more unusually, Boom! will also have access to Fox’s back catalogue, from which it can choose films to redesign in comic form.

2gunsAccording to The Hollywood Reporter, Boom!’s recent acquisition of Archaia was likely a huge deciding factor in the deal, having strengthened the company and increased its library. THR also notes that, “The new pact is a strong indicator of creative aggressiveness from Fox, which is reestablishing its identity after the ouster of co-chairman Tom Rothman.”

Of course, Fox also has plenty to gain from the venture. In return for its unprecedented offer, Fox now has access to a vast mine of material from a rapidly expanding publisher which, unlike Marvel and DC, continues to create new intellectual property rather than relying on older, well-established characters. Said 20th Century Fox’s production president Emma Watts:

“Boom!/Archaia has emerged as a publishing powerhouse devoted to original, innovative storytelling and world-class artists. Along with our recent deal with Epic, this relationship reinforces Fox’s commitment to attracting top-tier talent with smart, commercial content, as well as supporting a new breed of producer.”
