Marvel Comics has this week announced plans to publish a series of comics inspired by Disney theme park attractions under its brand new Disney Kingdoms imprint. The first of these, Seekers of the Weird, will be based on the planned but never built Museum of the Weird.

Designed by imagineer Rolly Crump back in 1965, the idea for the museum was scrapped after the death of Walt Disney the following year. According to a statement made by Marvel, the attraction was conceived as “a spooky walk-through attraction connected to The Haunted Mansion,” which was “home to a collection of mystical curiosities said to have been unearthed from all corners of the globe.”

The new comics’ story will centre on teenagers Maxwell and Melody who must journey through the museum and work against a mysterious, shadowy society in order to recover their kidnapped parents. Beginning in January, the series will be published in five installments written by Brandon Seifert and illustrated by Karl Moline. Additional details will be announced at the New York Comic Con this weekend.
